I can speak on this subject because , I had family members displaced during this storm and some of them have n’t been heard from since Katrina . The community still is n’t right as we know it to be to this date . Pitts states , ” four years after Hurricane Katrina , survivors will tell you the event of the day and the day after were both horrifing and haunting . ” I still have relatives that hide when they hear the wind blow really hard . I have my sister – in – law that lives with us and when it starts to rain hard she wants to get in the card and drive to another state . It ‘s been really hard on my great aunt because she has n’t heard from her common law husband since the storm . No one know where he is and we are affraid that he was one of the casualities during the storm . He was 90 years old but he was in great shape . I ‘ve visited my home town on several occasions after the aftermath of Katrina and I can say things will never be the same . When people get displaced and most of them do n’t come back the city is n’t the same . I can tell you from experience , that the food on Canal street in down town New Orleans is terrible . You have to venture outside the city limits to get that good old fashion New Orleans crusiene . I do n’t think New Orleans will ever recover 100 percent because most of the natives of the city are displaced . I think that mental health services would have helped the people who could n’t afford it get the treatment that they needed but I do n’t think it would have speeded up the recovery . I think they made the recovery efforts to political and forgot about the people . The people only wanted their homes rebuilt . We wanted to get back home !!! The city of New Orleans let us down and they made it all about them and forgot the most important element in a recovery effort , the people . My relatives still hurt to this day and most of them are scared of any type of storm .
