Review Quantitative and Qualitative Methods in Chapter 1 and Chapter 8, survey research. Briefly, discuss the use of survey research in exploratory, descriptive, explanatory, and evaluation studies.
Using a criminal justice example select one type of research study and develop one research question that you might use in a research proposal.
Research can be conducted basing on qualitative or quantitative research design. Qualitative research obtains data through open ended questions and semi structured interviews as it seeks to explain a phenomena. Quantitative research on the other hand analyses data that is numerical or statistical by testing casual relationships.
The use of survey research in exploratory setup. Exploratory research is known to investigate the problem that isn’t clearly defined. Thus, this type of research surrounds formulation of the problem and creation of hypothesis. Therefore, if survey is used in this type of research, quick information is obtained from the survey that can apply both qualitative and quantitative strategies. It is perceived that random sampling of the population is not examined as its aim is but collection of feedback.
Descriptive research focuses on accurately defining the population or phenomena thus it is based on various guidelines. Survey is used to explain as well as describe this populations and phenomena further thus regarded as an example of descriptive design. This is done by aiming the data and the different conditions which they can be obtained in connection to various subjects.
Explanatory research is used to explain the reasons as to why phenomena happen. This is conducted through probability sampling and surveys are used to investigate the factors that facilitate or cause such a phenomena to occur.
Evaluation studies on the other hand is used to evaluate the program. This looks into the purpose of the research rather than the method to be used. It evaluates the impact of social interventions and surveys are used to clarify the objectives behind the study.
An example of using these research falls under explanatory research. The research question being: Whether there is racial discrimination in pea bargaining process in American Criminal Justice system.
Qualitative research has been used to explain the phenomena behind the research question. This focuses on semi structured interviews and questions that are open ended which is analyzed and coded to come up with themes. In quantitative research, statistical analysis and numerical data is applied in the data collected.
Surveys have been used to collect data, clarify objectives of the study, explore the phenomena as well as investigating.
Exploratory research uses survey to investigate the sample or the population provided thus relies on the hypothesis formulated.
Descriptive research on the other hand is known to collect data for the research as survey is also known to be descriptive in one way or the other thus assisting in developing nexus between variables.
Explanatory research explains the phenomena in question. The survey is used to investigate such a phenomena in order to come with conclusive results by looking into the sample.
Evaluation studies is used to evaluate any social impacts and interventions. The surveys are used to clarify their objectives in question thus it is important in distinguishing so.
Explanatory research is used in qualitative studies to tell more about the phenomena and the research questions to be answered.
Research question: whether there is racial discrimination in plea bargaining process within the criminal justice system.

Using a criminal justice example select one type of research study and develop one research question that you might use in a research proposal.
Elder abuse is an intentional actions that cause harm or create a serious risk of harm to a vulnerable elder by a caregiver or other person who stands in a trust relationship to the elder , or failure by a caregiver to satisfy the elder ‘s basic needs or to protect the elder from harm . In the US there is a high number of elders being abused , my research is that i would have investigators visit nursing homes to see if they have Develop a comprehensive care plan , with measurable goals and timetables , to meet resident ‘s medical , nursing , and mental and psychosocial needs . Educating and training those in the criminal justice system , such as police , prosecutors , and the judiciary , on elder abuse , as well as increased legislation to protect elders , i will also help to minimize elder abuse and will also provide improved assistance to victims of elder abuse . i would develop programs that are structured around meeting the needs of elderly persons .
