In the article that I found , Social and behavioral research for homeland security by John Voeller , it describes how scientists observe the human behavior on more than 12,000 people . This will be to aid the Department of Homeland Security in identifying individuals who have malfeasance intent of terrorism . This research is designed to ensure these scientist know how to understand what they are observing . The scientists will observe the signs of a person thinking and what they are feeling . They will decipher the difference between anxiety , stress and paranoia . This study is done by watching for sudden changes in a person ‘s attitude , emotion or cognitive effort . This aids the Homeland Security with spotting individuals with malfeasance intent . ” Research on human behavior and deception detection can make a useful contribution to Homeland Security ” ( Voeller , 2014 , pg. 42 ) . These scientist must develop a research paradigm for Homeland Security so they are able to ” closely mirror the real – life contexts in which security personnel work ” ( Voeller , 2014 , pg. 42 ) . I feel that this technique of observation can go both ways . If a person has malfeasance intent then they would have practiced in the most stressful situations to prepare themselves for security . This may take years of training . A person who was raised to believe all security is out to harm you will show a difference in attitude and emotion when security is around them . They may try to turn away and leave , or even start to run . This behavior can take the eye off of someone with real malfeasance intent . Though if you are able to watch a person longer than a minute or two I am sure this would benefit the Department of Homeland Security . I am unsure on if there is a way to fully understand what ” liars actually look like ( i.e. the difference between people ‘s perceived clues to lying , compared to the actual clues ) ” ( Voeller , 2014 , pg. 41 ) .
