By randomly selecting people researchers have a better chance of obtaining a more accurate understanding on what is considered dominant or more favored , like in the case of cellphone only households versus landline households . The reason for this is because random selection allots for a mixture of people from different age groups , ethnicities , etc . However , it still is not full proof . If Pew Research wanted to obtain the most accurate estimate on the number of cellphone only households , random selection may be a good way to start . It might also be a good idea to separate their research based on age groups as the older generation population may be more likely to be a landline only household or a household that only uses their cellphones for emergency purposes . Once the estimates per age group have been complete it could then be compared or measured to a national census . This would allow them to understand what is more predominant as the researchers would be able to determine whether there is more of a population within those particular age groups .
