The eighth amendment states “ Excessive bail shall not be required , nor excessive fines imposed , nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted ” Eighth Amendment , n . d . The purpose of this amendment is to ensure that offenders are only given punishments that are appropriate to the crimes that they have committed . It also ensures that people who practice the law can not inflict punishments or fines on people just because they do not like them or because they have a hatred for the type of crime that sed person committed . I believe the founders included this provision in the Bill of Rights to protect all citizens against being subjected to punishments that are inhumane . This provision was very necessary because there was a time where humans were put on display to be killed or mutilated in front of the general public .
