Sampling theory assists in process of criminal justice research by indicating the relationship between the sample used and the entire population.

Sampling methods are used in most studies to;

-facilitate the research process

-makes the research cost-effective

-indicates the validity of the findings

Sample refers to the subset or part of a population. They are expected to to be representative of the entire population. The sampling theory is used in criminal justice research to evaluate the relationship between the sample used and the entire population. The findings from the sample used in the study are assumed to reflect or represent the behavior of the entire population. The criminology researchers would therefore apply the findings to various strategies that are used to control crimes. For example , a random sample survey that concludes that people prefer community services to incarceration would be assumed to apply to the entire population within a region, country or state.

Sampling methods are used in most studies to;

-facilitate the research process-it is generally impractical to cover the entire population during the study. The sample therefore reduces the respondents to a manageable number that can easily be accessed by the researcher.

-makes the research cost-effective-it is also cost effective to use sampling during the study as it provides convenience in the process. More money would be spent if the entire population was to be involved.

-indicates the validity of the findings -a larger sample size makes the study more valid whereas a smaller sample size reduces the validity of the findings. The sample size therefore defines the applicability of research findings.
