Open source intelligence is used by the CIA and is compiled of data from public resources. These public resources include social media and other images and information found on the internet. Open source intelligence can be used to assess potential threats during many scenarios including basing the threats on the response from terror groups overseas to political news in the United States. Open source intelligence can also gain information about potential attacks through social media posts because it has become normal for some terrorists to post on their social media prior to committing an act of terror. The NSA commonly uses the Signals Intelligence to ensure national security. This intelligence method uses electronic signals to obtain information about overseas targets in regards to their communication systems, potential weapons systems and allows to gain an understanding of their intentions and capabilities. This can be used to ensure homeland security by assessing which groups are the greatest threat which allows the United States to focus on preventing these threats from occurring efficiently. I believe the Signals Intelligence type is the most important as it allows for a risk assessment to be obtained. It is a waste of resources to blindly focus on terror groups or certain countries based on past threats because they may not be actively attempting an attack on the United States currently. This makes it important to obtain the best quality risk assessment and the Signals Intelligence method allows for this information to be obtained and allows for our resources to focus on preventing attacks based on the threat level.
