Important components of professional identity development include mentorship, professional socialization, and reflection.
One important component in the development of professional identity is reflection. Reflecting constructively helps people anchor in their minds new concepts and encourages adoption of new perspective. This is important in development of a professional identity and maturity as well as developing a deeper feeling of professionalism (Chin, Phillips, Woo, Clemans, & Yeong, 2020).
Two other important components are professional socialization and mentorship. Professional socialization is the interactions with professionals in a similar field as the learner. It creates a greater sense of belonging and aids in identity formation. Mentorship is also important for professional identity formation. One has to identify with a mentor in their specific profession to help one build confidence (Chin, Phillips, Woo, Clemans, & Yeong, 2020). It provides basis for professional identify formation as the learner has a role model to emulate. To develop a professional identity, one will need to find professional bodies to be part of and find a mentor or top of practicing self-reflection.
