Public health per Novick & Morrow ( 2014 ) is a consistent organized effort aimed at improving the health of populations . The importance of public health and population – based interventions is underscored by achievements in the 20 th century during which individuals living in developed countries increased life expectancy from 45 to 75 years . Now in the 21 st century we have seen this increase to 78 years in the United States because of the implementation of public health measures such as improved air quality , clean drinking water , better nutrition , improved sanitation practices and vaccines . Vaccines is one of the great public achievements because of the proven effectiveness against treating infectious diseases in 1900 such as , smallpox , measles , diphtheria , pertussis , rabies , typhoid , cholera , and the plague are preventable through widespread use of vaccines ( Novick & Morrow , 2014 ) . Even though vaccines have proven to be the best defense currently available against infectious diseases , no vaccine is 100 % safe or effective for everyone because each person ‘s body reacts to vaccines differently ( CDC , 2015 ) . Per the CDC , ( 2015 ) , as infectious diseases become less common , we hear less about the serious consequences of preventable illnesses like diphtheria and tetanus and more about the risks associated with vaccines , but the reality is that Americans have never been healthier than we are today , and vaccines have never been safer than they are today . The benefits of vaccines far outweigh the risks and as science continues to advance there will be the development of safer vaccines and improve delivery to protect against disease more effectively . The CDC statistics shows dramatic declines in vaccine – preventable diseases when compared with the pre-vaccine era , examples of a 100 % decrease in preventable diseases includes , polio , small pox and diphtheria . The decrease numbers are equally impressive in other diseases such as H. influenzae Hepatitis A + B , Measles , Mumps , Pertussis , Rubella , Varicella , and Tetanus which are in the 90 % range .
