Nationalism
Which one seems to be the most contentious and why?
Territorial integrity
Why?
Sovereign-nation state usually takes the land of the other in the territorial border. There are several countries up to date that is still fighting on the land issue in the border and reaching an agreement is not easy because each side of government holds to its stand, Castellano, J., 2007).
Solving territorial issues is not easy because of legal difference. Each sovereign nation state has its Constitution and harmonizing between the two countries is usually not easy as each claims its sovereignty.
Terrorists usually cross the territory border and cause harm in the other country creating more conflict between borders for example between the Islamic states and other non-Islamic states. There has been continuing conflict and war because of territorial integrity issues.
There is the issue of supremacy when dealing with the land territorial issue. A country can be aware of the real truth but just want to fight so as to win and never be a loser. This is so unfortunate because countries ought to be the truth but not fighting for supremacy.

Step-by-step explanation
Elements necessary to being a sovereign nation-state are;
Having a permanent population,defined territory,one government,capacity to enter into relations with other sovereign states,
neither dependent on or subject to other sovereign powers.
Independence from foreign control seems contentious because it limits intervention of foreign powers even when there serious violations in a state simply because sovereignty heaps territorial control to a state and hence it has control over its internal activities such as political activities and to exercise permanent sovereignty within the limits of their territorial jurisdictions.
