In my opinion, Affirmative action is generally a racist policy. Though its intent appears to be good, it actually hurts people and the company itself. The main reason is because it gives competitive advantage to people on immutable characteristics such as skin, ethnicity, appearance. The biggest victims of this are asian applicants to schools and jobs. They are expected to perform much higher than african-americans or hispanics for no reason other the shade and pigment of their skin. Take a look into the Harvard lawsuit case where asian americans sued Harvard because they were requiring much higher standards for asians than blacks.
I do believe that a company forced to meet this requirement can end up hiring lower quality people. Take for example take this event, the national average population for black americans is roughly 13%. Imagine a region, for example in New Hampshire, where only 2% of the population is black, now try to meet that qouta, in a really small pool, you will have no choice but to lower you standards because there are enough black applicants in general.
Or take this simple example, a region where 50 percent people are hispanic and 50 percent Asian. Lets assume most asians in this area are pursing degrees in finance, and most hispanics are pursuing degrees in Education. Now imagine how will each industry be able to reflect a unified qouta, if most hispanics don’t pursue finance and most asians don’t pursue education.
