Discuss the importance of advocacy as it pertains to patient care. What is the nurse’s role in patient advocacy? Describe a situation in which you were involved with patient advocacy. Explain what the advocacy accomplished for the patient, and what the repercussions would have been if the patient would not have had an advocate.

Advocacy is important because the concerns of the patients are getting addressed.
Nurses act as the liaison between the patient and the physician.
I had a patient who refuses to take oral suspension antibiotics, talked to the HCP about it and he switched it to IV.
If there was no advocacy, the pt will keep refusing the medication thus, worsens her symptoms.

1.) Discuss the importance of advocacy as it pertains to patient care.

Through advocacy, the patients’ concerns with regards to their treatment are getting addressed. This is important to help patients and their families to understand the unfamiliar medical system. Through an advocate, they will be able to have information about the certain treatment that the healthcare provider has recommended thus, guides them to make a decision accordingly because there will be times where the client will have a question that they are supposed to want to ask their physician, considering that physicians aren’t there all the time, someone needs to deliver those messages to the physician. Through advocacy, their concerns will be addressed.

2.)What is the nurse’s role in patient advocacy?

Being an advocate is one of the many roles of nurses. We spend a lot of time with our patients and their families where we communicate with them constantly. Nurses become the person who assists when the patient and the family have some important discussion with the HCP but they are too conscious or afraid to ask. They basically act as the liaison between the patient and hcp. They also educate the patient to make decisions about their own treatment by giving them information and explaining things that they do not understand.

3.) Describe a situation in which you were involved with patient advocacy.

When I was working in the pediatrics ward I had a patient which is an 11-year-old pediatric diagnosed with Pneumonia was prescribed an antibiotic suspension twice a day per oral route. The patient doesn’t want to take the medication because she doesn’t like its taste. Her mother asks if there is another way to give the antibiotic. As a nurse, you told her that you’ll talk to the HCP about it. You contacted the HCP and informed him about the situation, and recommended shifting the medication to an IV route and he agreed.

4.)Explain what the advocacy accomplished for the patient, and what the repercussions would have been if the patient would not have had an advocate.

In that situation, the nurse talked to the HCP on behalf of the mother about the treatment that wasn’t effective. If there was no advocacy, the patient will not be compliant in taking the medication considering that an antibiotic is a primary treatment for patients with bacterial Pneumonia. Not taking the medicine will worsen the symptoms and will not treat the patient at all.
