Roles of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Education during Covid-19

Information and Communication Technology plays a critical role in ensuring society stays updated on critical issues ranging from health, economy, and politics. It provides the newer, better, and simplest way of interaction, education, and transformation on the basic issues in life. Access to information has been made easier and more fascinating in the current digital world. The passage of information seems to be seamless without any bureaucratic issues. For this reason, many people rely on radios, television, smartphones, and computers to be informed on the trending issues and those that can better their lives in one way or another. Covid-19 is an infectious disease caused by the novel strain coronavirus. The spread and pathogenicity of this disease prompted it to be declared a global pandemic. As a norm, when the pandemic occurs, every aspect of human life is impacted, especially the education sector, with over a billion youths and students worldwide.

After Covid-19 the outbreak, different aspects of the virus, such as its origin, mode of transmission, the pathogenicity, and the various ways in which it could be contained, were greatly emphasized by both the local and international media through various communication gadgets. Educational Institutions worldwide also adopted ICT to connect with their students to continue learning. One of the most noticeable ways of providing education despite the ripple effects of Covid-19 was the transition to online learning. Despite the lockdown regulations, this form of learning with advanced technology-enabled education acquisition for students worldwide. Due to the unprecedented role ICT played in education during Covid-19 remains the best mechanism for ensuring continuous learning. Every government should promote the ICT developments because they have many educational benefits, including the pandemic times.

The Different Roles of ICT in Education during Covid-19

Promotion of teamwork

ICT has been playing various significant roles in education since the Covid-19 outbreak. One of the roles is promoting teamwork which entails coming up together to achieve cohesiveness in learning. Due to the set pandemic regulations, especially in 2020, teachers and students could not go to school, making collaboration and working as a team difficult. However, through adopting ICT technologies such as Google Meets, teachers and students can work as a team. Teachers responsible for offering requisite guidance came together with a common objective and resources to offer education virtually to the students. The gathering of credible ideas concerning a certain educational discipline is important upon its delivery through the mechanism of ICT. Even though teamwork was promoted, some students did not benefit from this transformation and inventions because they come from disadvantaged school districts  (Catalano, Torff and Anderson).

Enhanced Access to learning materials

Another significant role that ICT has played in education during the pandemic is making educational materials accessible, which is a great way to promote learning. The availability of the internet has made access to critical information, especially in educational setup, less complex. Since the Covid-19 outbreak, online learning has been the norm in most schools around the globe  (Mehdi). Many people strive to get resourceful information from electronic books and peer-reviewed articles through online learning. ICT has made these scholarly sources to be easily accessible to people.

Promoted Effectiveness in Learning

ICT has also promoted effectiveness in education. Based on Bloom’s taxonomy, the objective that is always emphasized in education is enhancing the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and overall behavior. The objective is only achievable when there is effectiveness in education. ICT also encourages effective teaching with a perception that every student is destined to understand and understand what is being taught. This, in turn, impacts the students’ academic abilities, emotional conscience, and well-being in behavior. Despite the surge of Covid-19 cases, the use of ICT has been promoting efficiency in executing the knowledge passed to the students  (Catalano, Torff and Anderson). Observation of any assignment can also be monitored efficiently and effectively. Therefore, the effectiveness achieved through ICT in education during the Covid-19 pandemic is crucial.

Promotion of Literacy Movement and Development of Higer-Order Thinking

ICT has been promoting the literacy movement and the development of higher-order thinking skills during the Covid-19 pandemic. Since the inception of the pandemic, the adoption of ICT for education has opened an avenue for the development of higher-order thinking. At home, students had to plan, monitor, and control how different technologies work for them to join virtual classes. These practices promote the development of essential thinking and research skills. For example, the use of different ICT tools such as emails, image editing, video recording, screen sharing, and social networking made learning easier for all students and thus leading to the development of higher-order thinking skills (Nozaledaa, Dayag-Tungpalan and Arao). Thus the role exhibited by ICT in the provision of education is the immense acquisition of higher-order thinking skills.

Promotion of E-Learning and Inclusivity

ICT has positively contributed to education by enhancing the scope of e-learning and inclusivity. Since the pandemic’s beginning, many people have adapted to life on lockdown without physical interaction. This prompted the idea of e-learning through the use of communication technology that accommodates various conceptual ideas (Mehdi). Through e-learning, inclusiveness is established. This has seen millions of educational institutions worldwide striving to use technological systems that would enable them to provide quality education to their students. Also, the use of computerized applications such as Zoom has given many students the chance to express themselves in the areas that they do not understand based on the areas of their specialization. Social inclusion of the vulnerable community, especially the refugees, has been realized due to the access to education through communication technology  (AbuJarour).

Facilitation of Research and Education

Furthermore, ICT has been facilitating research about the coronavirus and educating people all over the globe. Facilitation of relevant research considered to have extensive implications on curbing the Covid-19 pandemic is vital because of its purpose on educational orientation. Various educational research requires relevant ICT channels to educate the world audience on the Covid-19 research efficacies. For example, after discovering the novel coronavirus, scientists around the globe embarked on uncertain scientific research with the hope of getting verified facts about the virus  (Mehdi). They hoped to discover a vaccine to enable the world population to develop an immune system with requisite antibodies against the Covid-19 viral antigens. As they were researching this, they kept educating the public about the research and viable ways that could protect them.


In conclusion, information and communication technology have played a critical role in ensuring society stays updated on critical issues ranging from health, economy, and politics. It provides the newer, better, and simplest way of interaction, education, and transformation on the basic issues in life. In terms of its role in education from the inception of the Covid-19 pandemic, it has greatly contributed to the teamwork among the teachers and students. Teamwork entails exploring communication and social perception to achieve cohesiveness in learning. ICT has also contributed immensely to the accessibility of sources and materials essential to learning. In addition, ICT has played a vital role in education during the Covid-19 pandemic, higher-order skills development, and societal enlightenment.

Societal Problems Facing African Americans

Ever faced a social problem? If yes, how often? Well, the purpose of humanity is the maintenance of equity in everything that pertains to existence. However, societal problems facing African Americans have been rising over the years. Today, the most noticeable social problems are mass incarceration, police brutality, and discrimination. We should work on solving these problems because they are currently blocking African Americans from attaining full equality in different ways.

Mass Incarceration

Mass incarceration refers to the unique, purpose-driven mechanism by which the United States government locks a large number of people in federal prisons. Currently, the number of African Americans incarcerated is estimated to be more than that of whites. Unfortunately, this trend is fuelled by the racism and disparity in ethnicity, specifically in the State Prisons  (Loury, Karlan and Wacquant 61). Incarceration of African Americans has been done disproportionately since the beginning of the early 1980s. Despite crime-like activities such as drug trafficking in African Americans' residential, the justice system does not deliver appropriate sentences to the blacks compared to those it delivers to the whites for similar crimes. One of the best solutions to mass incarceration is ensuring equal judicial trials and sentences for all members of society. In so doing, there would be an increased sense of fairness. Other ways to resolve mass incarceration are decriminalizing low-level felonies, reducing prison terms, and using prison alternatives.

Police Brutality

Police brutality has played a key role in advancing the societal problems that African Americans have faced over the years. One of the most common forms of police brutality exhibited by the police force is the unwarranted killings of African Americans. It prompted the campaign across the federal states against police brutality called 'Black Lives Matter'. The essence of the campaign was to stop the ill motives that the police had toward African Americans. Also, the occurrence of death and serious injuries was attributed to the excessiveness of the police force. Undeniably, this has proved traumatic to the victims' families such as George Floyd’s killing and Sandra Bland’s death  (Ritchie 206). The solution to police brutality would be to establish good reforms and make it easier for the police officers involved in any aspect of cruelty to be charged and sentenced  (Ray). Another way to resolve police brutality is to change the police culture by training them more about racial bias as well as demilitarizing them.


Discrimination constitutes one of the worst forms of societal problem deeply rooted in the systems of governance in the United States. This problem has contributed to joblessness, low-quality education, poor housing, low financial growth, and the absence of wealth creation among African Americans. Through these, the stratification of social classes has risen in which the whites are deemed to belong to the highest classes while the blacks belong lowest. Therefore, discrimination has contributed to inequality in the United States. The solutions to discrimination are extensive. They include providing equal academic programs, providing job opportunities based on merits without favoritism, and enhancing equality in social service provision in terms of healthcare. Importantly, black leaders such as Martin Luther Jr played significant roles in ensuring equality of cuts across all colors in America. Civil rights movements were organized and executed by other black leaders such as Quincy Jones and Albert Odell Jones  (Witter).
