  1. Culturally Responsive Skills

    Amatea (2013) suggests when teachers acquire culturally responsive skills for assessing parent engagement and facilitating parent participation, parents are more likely to become active within the school community (p. 145). Research your local school district. (Or use the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools

    Respond to the following: 

    • Summarize all pertinent information that makes up the district; student ethnic distribution, number of schools, percentage of economically disadvantaged students, etc..
    • Research the community itself (Can be found on the district website)
    • What unique student characteristics did you discover in the data?
    • What unique resources might exist in the community that this school serves? List at least (2) and explain how these can enhance student learning and academic achievement.

    Respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings. Include in your response your thoughts regarding each resource and if you will be able to take advantage of this resource in your school/classroom. 

  2. Partnership
    Review Figure 7.2, Need-Based Model of School-Community Service Delivery in your text. The school is the center of a series of partnerships with the local community. Give examples relative to your school/community (Or use the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools) for three (3) of the seven (7) partnerships listed in the model. Do not use any of the same resources or services listed in “Culturally Responsive Skills.”More importantly, explain how you would disseminate this information to the families in your classroom/school. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings.



A School’s Relationship with the Community

View The Classroom Mosaic- Culture and Learning. Then research one of the community associations that operate in your community or choose one of the following sites to complete your research: 

Utilizing the asset-based approach discussed in your reading and Figure 7.4 of the text, explain the services provided to children and families. Then do the following:

  • Choose one cultural event that interests you or that occurs in your community (e.g. Cinco de Mayo or Kwanzaa Celebration) and describe the event.

  • Explain the norms, values and assets that this particular event creates and perpetuates for the community.

  • Analyze the possible impact this event has on the students of the community where the event might typically take place.

Your paper should be at least three-five pages (not including the title and reference pages). You must include at least three credible sources, one of which must be your text, to support your explanation and analysis of the significance and importance of this cultural event.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.
